Research Your Business Niche!
Note: We will utilize several items from the
Resources
tab to research your business niche or ideas so you may want to read through now, then minimize the screen while accessing the resource tools we discuss after you are done.
Hopefully, you have a grasp of your internet business idea that you want to start with. Now we begin to do a little research to see what will happen with it. If if you feel that you are not “qualified” to help others in any particular area, then you may want to head over to the
Opportunities
tab and start there first. Don’t feel bad about not having any ideas – You may get some there!
1. We will utilize a great
Keyword Research Tool
to see if there is a market for your business and if it will be profitable for you! All you have to do is enter the words or phrases (keywords) that will pertain to the business. The tool will give you statistics that we will analyze futhure. It will also provide keywords that you may not have thought about. If these extra keywords have high results, save them.
I would suggest saving this information on your computer as a document so that you can access it later. Copy and paste the word or phrase you use and the Count from the tool.
Ok, enter your first keyword (not a business name). You may want to enter keywords that are problem/solution based such as: tennis racket repair, better tennis swings, etc. Look at how many searches are being done for that keyword and find ones that are in the 900’s or higher.
“KEY:” Smaller searches in the hundreds are ok if you are targeting or providing services in a local area. Tennis coaching, as an example! Then you would research for (tennis coaching Charlotte, NC).
Copy and paste the keywords that you find that are high volume. Then keep going through your other keywords or ideas so that you have a large list of keywords. Don’t forget about entering things like your headings and sub-pages titles!
----------------------------------------------------------
Once you have your keywords list with the counts we can go and see what the other business competition is like! We want to have a unique selling position (USP) so we need to analyze what the completion is doing! You don’t want to be competing against thousands of others.
Start by opening Google (or downloading the Google Toolbar for Free). Enter a keyword and look at the Results located at the top of the page. As of July, 2008 a search for tennis brought up this result: (Results 1 – 10 of about 212,000,000 for tennis).
Holy Smokes! That is a TON of competition and would not be a good keyword. Let’s keep trying our keywords. Tennis Forehand Video brought back (Results 1 - 10 of about 90,800 for tennis forehand video). That’s getting better.
Note: You are looking for keywords with results of 100 or less, 25 or less is IDEAL! This will insure that you are on the first 1-2 pages of a Google search that someone else performs. Most screens only allow 10 sites per page: Hence 1-10 of about 212,000,000 for tennis.
2. Let’s go even deeper! We will now use a back link tool on Google to check the links that are associated with some of the sites listed on the first page. We will animalize that information to see more about your competition.
The tool is located on the Google bar and as of July, 2008, it looks like a small green circle with arrows pointing to it. If you don’t find it you may have to add it. Google has great video tutorials on all of this so don’t think you can’t do it. It is very simple to do.
Now, let’s plug in a keyword, let the page load and then click on one of the results listed on the left side listed under “WEB”. Next, click on the back link icon and see how many links are there listed at the top as: (WEB Results 1 – 10 of about 38). We want to see multiple sites with 25 or less back links. This will allow you a ranking within the first page or two! Great! In this instance, less is more. It means that the keyword you entered would be a keeper!
Document this somehow on your saved, keyword list. Then keep plugging the other keywords in so that you have multiples of great links. See - business research isn't hard it just takes a little time.
